Current Strengths in the N.E. Pacific

Click on the diagram above to get a larger version. This diagram offers some simple indicators showing variability in the strength of the North Pacific Current, The Alaska Current and the California Current. These are differences in dynamic height across these current systems computed from the maps shown here.

Click on the diagram above for a display of the latitude of the dividing streamline on 145°W, the longitude of Ocean Station Papa. As with the first diagram, these data are computed from the maps shown here.

The methods used to create the maps are explained in a paper by Freeland and Cummins (2005).

The computation of the current strength indicators are described in a paper by Freeland (2006).
